Sector information
Friesland has a long and strong tradition in agrifood production. Around 4/5 of its landmass is used for agriculture! Friesland’s agrifood sector consists of about 6,500 agricultural businesses and 270 companies in the food industry. The sector is set to become fully sustainable by 2025. This commitment to innovation and sustainability ensures a bright future for Frisian agriculture.
Dairy
The Frisian dairy sector is known around the world. Not only does the famous Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle come from Friesland, the province is also home to internationally renowned dairy companies like FrieslandCampina. These modern businesses serve consumer markets as well as the foodservice industry. Products range from traditional dairy (like milk, cheese and butter), to e.g. milk powder, desserts and shakes.
A key organisation in the Frisian dairy sector is the Dairy Campus, a leading research institute and practice centre. It brings together research, business, government and education, to realise pioneering research and innovative projects. The Dairy Campus boasts 500 dairy cows, more than 300 hectares of land, and excellent training and conference facilities to make this cooperation possible.
Seed potatoes
Another leading Frisian agricultural product is the seed potato. Together with its fellow Northern province of Groningen, Friesland is responsible for 23% of the world’s seed potato exports. These potatoes are shipped to more than 80 countries worldwide. Regional platform The Potato Valley facilitates cooperation throughout the chain, to ensure a vital potato and robust, sustainable cultivation.
